Announcing Pop 2010 Tryouts

Pop is a competitive club women's ultimate team based out of the Twin Cities. We're only two years old, but we've already proven ourselves as one of the top teams in the region by qualifying for nationals 2 years in a row. This year we are hoping to continue to build from the strength of the Twin Cities ultimate community by adding some new blood to our core of Pop stars. Players interested in being part of the Pop 2010 team are invited to attend tryouts on the following dates:

Wednesday, May 26th at 6:15 pm

Wednesday, June 2nd at 6:15 pm

Saturday, June 5th at 1:30 - 3:30 pm

Wednesday, June 9th at 6:15 pm ****Moved to St. Paul Academy****

Roster decisions will be made on Thursday, June 10th.

Our first practice will be held on Wednesday, June 16th at 6:15 pm

Pop is excited to announce that we will be taking practice players this year. We're looking for individuals that want to improve as ultimate players and are willing to work hard. Practice players will be equal members of the team and will be challenged and supported at practices, but will not travel to tournaments. Practice players must be able to commit to attending the majority of practices. Players interested in being practice players should attend tryouts. If you have any questions, please contact the Pop captains at pop.ultimate@gmail.com.

In our inaugural season Pop swept the Central Region and earned the highest finish at Club Nationals of any team in Minnesota women’s ultimate history. Pop is back in 2009 and we're gearing up to blow last year's record out of the water! Stay tuned for details about tryouts, tournament schedules and practice times. Autobiography: My father raised me to be a soccer player and my mother raised me to be a ballerina. I disappointed them both when I quit everything to play ultimate with the Macalester Purse Snatchers my sophomore year in college.. It took me my first five years of playing to learn that winning the party is not just as good as winning the tournament, but I think I am finally at a point in my frisbee career that my dad could be proud of my athletic endeavors again. Unfortunately my my mom is too distraught by the nasty scars I've acquired from raspberries to appreciate that I still point my toes when I jump. I've played club with Hot Action, Bait, Small Rackages and now Pop. However, the highlight of my frisbee career was co-captaining the all redheaded team SPF 50 at MUDI in 2008. Gingers forever.

Autobiography: Katie discovered her love of Ultimate at Lawrence in 2000. In fact, she loved Ultimate so much that a teammate once questioned her, "Katie, what would you choose: tropical paradise forever or Ultimate Frisbee?" It was a no-brainer. Katie played co-ed club in Madison starting in 2004 with Monkeyfist, Madhaus and New World Love Clan before switching to women's club, playing with Small Rackages and Pop.

Position: Deep. I live to run down big hucks.

Autobiography: I saw a poster for the Iowa State women's Ultimate team on the floor of my freshmen dorm the first week of college. I thought to myself "I think I played that in P.E." After that time, I've been unsuccessful at everything in "normal" life which others may understand. Sometime after my first college season, I found out one, maybe two fools, voted me the Freshmen of the Year in the Central Region. After that, I whored myself out to Club teams to feed a competitive addiction: Meddling Kids in Illinois, 2005, CLX going to Worlds in Australia 2006, and Small Rackages 2007. Now, my goal is to play the best Women's Ultimate that I can find nearby and POP is it baby! Since around the middle of my career thus far, I've been attempting to help captain Iowa State's "Women Scorned" to great things. I made all-region in the Central region of college last year so I'm glad I remembered what it took to be good between freshmen year to now. I like cheetah patterned skirts, showing off my quad muscles, long and unnecessary naps, Jack Johnson, the beach, backwards hugs and "keeping it on" because I "can't turn it off." I occupy the rest of my available time imagining my Ultimate offspring with various SubZero players.

-Years playing ultimate: 17ish. Jane Air (MN), Flygirls (CA), Clutch (MI), Bait, POP

-Achievements in Ultimate: silver medal as a coach for the 2004 US Junior Women's team at worlds in Finland (i've won some tournaments, but this was the coolest.)

-Occupation: Technical writing supervisor at Medtronic. I write manuals about implantable cardiac devices for doctors and nurses. Snap!

-Outside Ultimate: I am a not-so-closet Martha Stewart wannabe. My apple pie will make you wish I was your mom.

-Favorite sideline nourishment: GU and pringles will get you through anything

-Strange pre-tournament rituals: I always shower Friday night before a tournament. Clean hair and smooth legs make me feel fast (or at least less crabby about getting up at the butt crack of dawn.)

Interesting Facts about Tiger:
Krissy began her ultimate career in 2003 by starting and captaining the "Southern Oracles" at Edina High School. She then played for four years on the Colby College "Dazzlin' Asses" and was captain the last three years there. She managed to use her last year of college elligibility in 2008 by playing a year on the University of Minnesota "Ninjas," where she earned the award of MVP and Layout Queen! When she's not playing ultimate, Krissy is a second year PhD student in biomedical engineering at the U of M and that's pretty much all she does outside of frisbee because it takes up so much time!

Biography: Rachel started playing in the spring of 2002. Rachel Derscheid was trying to start the first women's team at ISU and needed players. R. Sheldahl's older sister Amy was recruited already and having the influence of an older sister, simply informed Rachel that she would be going to Sectionals. After attending one practice and then playing sectionals with 8 girls, Rachel was hooked. Ultimate was to consume her life from that point on. Rachel played for ISU Woman Scorned till graduation in 2005. She played on CLX from 2003 - 2006, Small Rackages in 2007, and Pop in 2008.

Autobiography: Lisa Fenske started playing friz at the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1991. She played in the women's division with "Wild Hairs" out of Corvallis, OR and "Fly Girls" out of Los Angeles, CA. Fenske also played what was then known as "co-ed" on the west coast through 1998. She then started playing in the women's division in the Minneapolis/St Paul area with "Jane Air" and then "Bait" until joining the bestest most greatest of Minnesota Women's teams with POP in it's current and inaugural year.

Tara has helped design and build bridges in four different countries (Peru, Honduras, El Salvador, and the United States). She likes to get skids in on her mountain bike whenever she is not riding her road bike. She is currently training for her first triathlon to follow in the footsteps of Slammer. In her spare time, she really enjoys gardening, building benches, making stained glass stepping stones, and enjoying a good biography or memoir in one of her hammocks. Although turning to the bottle at a very young age she was able to kick the habit around the same time she stopped eating the glue at school. She replaced the bottle with a whole lot of angriness but rumor has it she’s been caught cuddling recently! POP is thankful for her hucks, her IO flick and "don't mess with me" ATTITUDE!

When this messy kid is not making sure people are pain free when they are under the knife she's raining down hucks on some of POP's fastest cutters. POP is thankful for her endless knowledge, years of experience and cute new haircut.

On Tuesday, September 9, from 4pm to 9pm, Davanni's in St. Paul will donate a portion of customer orders to Pop. Pop will use funds raised to help poor teammates stay afloat, and hopefully to help send the team to Nationals!

For Pop to benefit, you need to present a flier when ordering. If you don't have a flier, come to the party room in the restaurant and get one from a Pop teammate.

Pop will also have fabulous koozies for sale! $3 each or 2 for $5.

Everyone and anyone is welcome - just remember to get the flier! Take out orders work as well, but not delivery.

Tryouts begin in 8 days and weather.com is finally predicting some good weather! We have received a lot of interest in the new team from all you ultimate ladies out there and we are anticipating a great tryout season with good turnout, a high level of play, and a lot of fun!

A few logistics to help you wannabe Poppers prepare:

All Tryouts will be held on the upper fields at Saint Paul Academy (1712 Randolf).

All tryouts will start on time, so come early enough to allow yourself time to cleat-up and get some throws in.

Bring a light and a dark shirt and a disc.

Come ready to work hard and have fun!
